A refreshing change from the old favourites of the Tyrol. Set in the heart of the Salzburger Sportwelt and Ski amade which boasts a total of 270 lifts an 860 km slopes this is an other resort which has managed to escape the large package holiday operators.
In favour of FlachauFlachau is a traditional spacious village in a pretty setting at one end of an extensive three - valley lift network and the home of Herman Maier. Offering a good standard and range of accommodation. Many of the properties are ski in/out or within very easy reach of the numerous lifts. An excellent snow record, particularly for snow before Christmas - much better snow than the altitude would lead you to expect. Because Flachau is so far east, it has a different weather pattern from Switzerland and France. In addition, there is extensive snowmaking in the area. Plenty of runs between the trees - provide interesting skiing and shelter in bad weather. Precious little queuing. A variety of good mountain restaurants. Three competing ski schools offering a high standard of tuition.
Disadvantages Not suitable for advanced/expert skiers
Non- skiing activities Winter hiking, sledding, alpine curling, horse drawn carriage rides, snow tubing. Snow shoeing. Non-skiers will enjoy the cultural activities of Salzburg, an hour away by road or rail
