Charming, rustic, picture postcard ski resort with access to extensive skiing of the Portes du Soleil. Open sunny slopes. One of our favourites. Short transfer from Geneva.
In Favour of Champéry A picturesque little Alpine village situated at the bottom of a valley. The Cable car Champery – Planachaux and modern chairlift Grand Paradis take you less than 5 minutes to get directly into the Portes du Soleil skiing area, the largest internationally linked ski area in the world. Champéry is ideal for those who love the atmosphere and more reasonable prices of a small Swiss village but also want skiing facilities comparable to one of the top resorts. Plenty of challenging skiing even for experts, including black mogul fields. Although perhaps less than ideal for beginners. With its capacity of 125, the Champery-Planachaux takes you up to the Portes du Soleil domain within 5 minutes. Night skiing on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Very few big tour operators go there.
Disadvantages If snow conditions permit there are a couple of pistes back down to the valley, which is a bus ride from the town but no pistes back to Champery itself. Beginners must take the cable car to reach the nursery slopes, which is less than ideal. Quite a long walk to the ski lift, unless the free ski buses are used. Nightlife fairly quiet.
Non-Skiing Activities Sports centre with swimming pool, skating, curling. Fitness centre. Thermal bath at Val d’Illiez nearby (5mins by car, 15 min by train). Paragliding, sledding, snowshoeing, ice climbing, Cleared paths for walking, Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing |
