In a prime position high on a south-facing plateau overlooking the Rhone valley, the two resorts have merged into one. Crans the more glitzy of the two with smart boutiques and restaurants and Montana is very much the skiers resort. 2 hours from the airport makes a weekend a possibility.
In Favour of Crans-Montana Traditional spa resort, which is aiming to appeal to a discerning clientele who are looking for more than just a ski resort. Its expensive shops are reputed to be the finest in the Alps. The British are just beginning to discover this delightful sunny resort. It is the third largest ski area in the Valais, after Verbier and Zermatt with three well linked ski areas, all ideal for beginners, intermediates and families. A good choice of easily accessible off-piste terrain which is often untracked. Glacier skiing. Night skiing. An excellent choice for cross-country skiing. Exceptional sunshine record combined with high altitude.
A high standard of hotels. Plenty for non-skiers to do although resort facilities are mainly daytime-oriented. Superb views over the Rhone Valley. Excellent resort facilities for children.
Disadvantages Sometimes heavy traffic at peak times. Scattered resort resulting in a lot of walking or taking of buses. Strong mid-day sun can affect the pistes meaning its not a great choice for late season.
Non Skiing Activities 60 kms of walking paths, Nordic walking, Snow kiting and monster biking. Fun. Park Bibi - an Adventure Park for children with toboggan runs, sledging, snow-tubing, snow biking and a flying fox. Snow karting, artificial ice-skating and curling rinks, hot air ballooning, indoor tennis and squash, bowling alleys. Various hotels have swimming pools and saunas open to the public.
