Flims has been a spa resort since the 1880’s. In 1962 the glacier above Flims and its neighbouring Laax was first developed for skiing. Together with the picturesque farming village of Laax they form what is now called Laax, one of the largest ski circuits in Switzerland. Extensive ski and snowboard area with runs for all grades in extremely beautiful tree lined terrain. Vorab glacier guarantees skiing from October until mid April. Virtually unknown outside the Swiss and German market and deserves much more international recognition. Short airport transfers.
In favour of Flims/Laax:Flims, Laax and Falera are three neighbouring villages in a sunny valley, which share the same skiing area. Flims is divided into two; Flims Dorf beside the cable car station (more ski convenient and better for nightlife) and Flims Waldhaus (Quiet and beautiful on a wooded hillside with a much bigger choice of hotels). The 2 areas are connected by bus. Tall pine trees dominate the resort. Access the whole ski area departs from Flims Dorf or Laax with a very impressive lift system. Transport to the ski lifts is by resort shuttle bus which is an efficient system included in the cost of the ski-pass. 70% of the slopes are above 1800m, which compensates for their sunny southern orientation. Laax attracts a high percentage of snowboarders and free-style skiers who gather at the terrain parks and half pipes.
Disadvantages The resorts are quite sunny and at relatively low altitude however the home runs back to Laax and Flims as well as some other slopes can be refreshed by snowmaking. The best place for nightlife is the clubs and bars in Laax, however, Flims Dorf has a club and a number of bars.
Non-skiing activities: Indoor tennis courts. 4 Hotel swimming pools and spa centres open to the public. Tobogganing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, horseback riding, paragliding, hot air ballooning. Rides, curling, skating, snowshoe walking and winter hiking. Classical concerts, Museums and Art Galleries.
