Few places rival the breathtaking views from Grindelwald’s hotel windows. Pretty village within easy reach of the airport. Wonderful views of the Eiger and the Wetterhorn mountains. Good family skiing but not over challenging. Good off-piste. Plenty for non-skiers to enjoy.

In favour of Grindelwald

Right at the foot of the Eiger, Grindelwald has two skiing areas: Kleine Scheidegg (shared with Wengen) and Grindelwald First. The Jungfrau Region ski pass allows you to ski Murren as well if you have the time.

Lively main street lined with wooden chalets in a typical Swiss style, attractive shops, hotels, bars and sunny cafés. Lots for the non-skier - shopping, day trips to Bussalp or Interlaken, rail-tours to the Jungfraujoch glacier and the ice-cave. Several mountain restaurants are accessible by mountain railway so non-skiers can easily meet up with skiing friends for lunch. Superb sports centre with indoor swimming pool, skating and curling rinks, sauna and solarium. Easy access to the Jungfrau ski area and Wengen. Ideal family skiing. Interesting off-piste skiing - it is worth taking a guide to explore the area.

Disadvantages

In early winter there can be a lack of sun because the village lies deep in the shadow of the Eiger. Skiing is good for families and for intermediates but real challenging stuff is mainly off-piste. Sometimes a fair amount of traffic in the village and often crowded at weekends.

Non-skiing activities

Artificial and natural ice skating rinks, curling, swimming, bowling alley, paragliding, heli-skiing, helicopter flights, glacier tours, ice climbing, Nordic walking, snowshoe hiking, horse carriage rides, cleared walking paths, snow tubing, toboggan runs also at night-time, including the longest in Europe (15km), several events like the world snow festival, Some hotels open their swimming pools to the public. Cinema, library, gallery, museum, concerts, ice hockey matches. A variety of Stüblis, bars, restaurants and discos.
