Big ski area with a variety of terrain. Impressive lift system suits most skiers. Sunny, but it keeps its snow due to its altitude
In favour of Alpe d'HuezWith an ideal climate, the resort is high enough at 1850m to have a good snow record and a long season. An excellent resort for beginners and families with good nursery slopes and excellent artificial snow cover. Night skiing in new stadium 3 evenings per week. Lift system is accessible from 7 different parts of the resort. Off-piste itinerary routes. Three terrain parks. Free ski shuttle-bus. Alpe d’Huez is linked to Vaujany - an impressive area of north-facing slopes, making it the fifth largest ski area in France. Two days' skiing can be taken in the nearby resort of Les 2 Alpes with the minimum of a 6 day Visalp pass, using the bus link which runs every Wednesday and Thursday, at extra cost.
Disadvantages South and west facing slopes can loose snow where there has been a lot of sun, but links with Vaujany will compensate. Practically no tree skiing in bad weather. Piste grading underplays the difficulty. Weekend crowds.
Non-skiing Activities Visalp lift pass (whole area – from 2 days) gives free access to the Sports Centre with 26 activities, 2 swimming pools, and an ice rink. Cinema. Helicopter connections between airports and Alpe d'Huez. 30 km. of cleared snow walks. Apres-Ski lasts well into the early hours with something for everyone from small friendly hotel bars to late night bars and vibrant clubs. |
