Chic and sophisticated, a piece of Paris in the Alps. Easy access to Geneva. Pretty tree lined skiing area and inviting mountain restaurants.
In favour of MegèveThe core of the village is 13th century with narrow cobbled streets and an array of smart boutiques, bars and restaurants. The focal point of the town is in the car free central square which is surrounded by beautiful 18th buildings and a medieval church. Brightly painted sleighs ply for service from here and are a fun way to explore this attractive resort. A weekly market is also held here selling Savoyarde specialties. After dark, Megeve is a pleasant place to stroll around. There is a great variety of apres ski with something for everyone from small friendly atmospheric bars to late night jazz bars and vibrant clubs.
This surprisingly large ski area extends from the spa town of St Gervais to the village of Saint Nicholas-de-Veroce and is perfect for beginners and intermediates. The domain is blessed with some of the best mountain restaurants, perfect for gourmet skiers. The ski area is divided into three sectors with the two main areas, Mont d’Arbois and Rochebrune linked. Although the resort is only 1,000m, it tends to stay open during bad weather, because of its sheltered tree-lined skiing, when the surrounding resorts have to close.
Disadvantages Although the centre is car-free, surrounding traffic can be congested in high season. Megève is a low resort, which does not have a particularly long season and can be expensive.
Non-Skiing Activities Time out from the mountain can be spent snowshoe walking with 50km of trails to explore or just meeting friends for lunch in one of the many gourmet mountain restaurants. Sports complex with swimming pools for adults and children and skating and curling. Two cinemas. Casino and 70 restaurants.
