Skiing in Switzerland

The land of efficiency, hospitality and service. The Swiss are expert hoteliers and every detail is carefully attended to.

Most ski resorts are high and have impressive slopes including some of the highest and toughest runs in the Alps. Traditional farming communities often dominated by a few families and sometimes car-free make for great family holiday opportunities. Children are well looked after in ski schools and resort crèches.

You can set your watch by the efficient train service which runs like clockwork, making transfers easy. Most resorts have a railway station and the few that don’t are well served by bus from the valley.

The old-world charm of Switzerland is captivating with picturesque villages, rustic chalets, high mountains and spectacular scenery. New building is strictly controlled.

Food is generally of a good standard. Mountain restaurants in converted cowsheds have the attraction of Swiss specialities, which make for tasty lunches at moderate prices compared with the motorway style cafeterias to be found in other countries.

Nightlife varies hugely in Switzerland depending on resort but as tourism is based mainly on hotels and not apartments, you will usually find bars and restaurants full of life in the evening and often live music.

The possibilities for short-breaks are a real selling point for Switzerland. The majority of resorts will offer any duration stays and there are a good selection with transfers short enough to make the most of a 4-night stay.

It is of popular belief that Switzerland is expensive. Whilst this isn’t necessarily so, top resorts will be pricey, as with Austria’s  Lech and France’s Courchevel! What you get in return for your money however is first class.

Switzerland’s main disadvantage is the development of the ski lifts. As few of the resorts are purpose-built, but are real villages, often some walking is involved to get to the lifts in the morning. However most resorts are served by an excellent bus system round the village, usually included in the cost of your ski pass
