Switzerland’s most famous winter resort. The name conjures up such eccentricities as the Cresta run, private jets, and horse racing on the frozen lake. Overall it offers a superb winter wonderland experience with great intermediate and cross-country skiing.
In favour of St Moritz The Engadine valley, open, wide and beautiful is a must for any alpine visitor, summer and winter. High altitude and a particularly dry climate almost guarantee good snow cover even on the lower slopes. The Corvatsch glacier extends the ski season well into May. Cross-country ski tracks are likely to be in good condition until April. Downhill skiing is excellent for all standards, though you must be prepared to travel around the valley to get the most out of it. The ski shuttle bus system links the different ski areas – most of which do not interlink up the mountain. Apart from the many obvious facilities available in St. Moritz (shops, après ski etc), a great deal of the attraction is watching and rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous.
Disadvantages Can be expensive. Transfers from the airport are not quick, but considerably enhanced by the Glacier Express train from Chur. Nursery slopes are not always very convenient.
Non-skiing Activities Winter walking, snow-shoe hiking, horse carriage excursions, concerts, excellent shops, ski competitions and activities on the frozen lake. The Cresta run, Switzerland’s longest toboggan run, Indoor tennis, squash, hand-gliding, paragliding, skating, curling, public indoor pool. Sleigh rides, 120 km of cleared paths. Casino, numerous bars and restaurants.
