Pretty low-traffic village in the shadow of the Jungfrau mountain in the beautiful Bernese Oberland. Classic traditional Alpine resort. Good on and off-piste opportunities. Families and children will enjoy, non-skiers too.

In favour of Wengen

Wengen is reached only by a scenic mountain railway, which climbs from the Lauterbrunnen valley to this picturesque village on a south-facing ledge. The village lies on a sunny, south-west facing terrace about 1250 metres above sea-level and offers incomparable panoramic views of the famous alpine trio of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains from the village and the ski slopes – arguably the best views in the Alps.

Wonderful mountain restaurants, many of which are accessible by railway for non-skiers, who can also take gentle walks around the ski area, as well as day trips to Jungfraujoch, Interlaken and Mürren. Although not that high in altitude, the base is pastureland, which helps preserve good snow conditions when snow is scarce. You can usually enjoy skiing in Wengen until well into April.

The village kindergarten provides good childcare usually with English speaking child carers. Recent improvements to the nursery slope area include 2 magic carpets, which replace the 2 previous draglifts and are much easier for small children to cope with.

Disadvantages

The skiing is less extensive than its spectacular location would suggest. You can’t actually ski on the Eiger. No really tough black runs.

Non-skiing activities

Artificial and natural ice rinks, curling, paragliding. Winter walking in conjunction with the mountain railway, exciting toboggan runs, Excursions by rail to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe, Kleine Scheidegg and on to Grindelwald and Mürren. Many mountain restaurants in the area can be reached by train or foot, making this area ideal for non-skiers.
