Claiming to be the highest hotel in the Swiss Alps at
3100m, this hotel would suit those looking for a
unique ski holiday with maximum time on the slopes.
The hotel has a stunning location, at the top of the
Gornergrat mountain
railway with glorious views of the Matterhorn. In the
heart of the ski area with easy access to Trockener
Steg, Rothorn and Stockhorn ski areas. It takes
about 45 minutes to reach the hotel on the mountain
cog railway from Zermatt station. The hotel has just
been completely refurbished in a contemporary
minimalist style, which contrasts with its rather
austere exterior. It was built as a hotel and
observatory in 1907. The observatory still exists and
its location provides perfect conditions for
research. There is a cosy traditional style stubli serving a 4-course
dinner with choice, a massive sun terrace and a
coffee shop. Despite its vast size the hotel only
has 23 bedrooms.
However If you are looking for some après
ski, this is not the place to stay because the last
train leaves from Zermatt at 7pm. This for some
guests however is part of its charm! It would be
ideal for those who love nature as the mountain goats
and chamois come right up close to the terrace at
night and the sunsets viewed from here are quite
spectacular. Bed & Breakfast or Half board
