Mammoth developed as a mining town in 1847 and is now transformed into a major international resort. High altitude and an incredible snow record enable the ski lifts to open between early November and June.

In Favour of Mammoth

One of North America's most colossal ski mountains with terrain to suit all abilities. Good mix of Alpine style bowls and US style wooded slopes. The main base of the mountain is located 4 miles above Mammoth Lakes. You can stay in either area. Mammoth is a resort that expects you to arrive by car and move about by car. Uncrowded slopes except at peak season weekends.

Some exciting chutes, steeps and glades for expert skiers as well as a wide variety of tree skiing.

Many lifts access blue as well as black runs. California is less cold than Colorado and Utah.  300+ sunny days per annum.

The new "Village at Mammoth" offers well-equipped condos with direct access to the snow by the village gondola. This property is in the heart of Mammoth with a pedestrian shopping centre, bars and restaurants.  Due to the thermal activity in the area, Mammoth is surrounded by hot springs which are great to dip into at the end of the day.

Against Mammoth

Long transfer up to 5 hours. Weekend crowds in high season. Wind can close high lifts and the skiing at a higher level can be icy.

Other activities

Nordic Skiing and Snowshoeing. Snowmobile adventures.

Interpretation tours to find out about the flora and the fauna of Mammoth Mountain.

Accommodation

The condos tend to be out of town, near the lifts or on the road to them, so a car is essential.  The Village at Mammoth is the newest property built by Intrawest located next to the Village gondola, which connects to Canyon Base from where you can access the whole mountain. An alternative to this are the Juniper Springs Lodges located at Juniper Springs base, offering doorstep skiing and condos of a luxurious standing. A more modest property is the Mammoth Mountain Inn, located at the base of the ski slopes right and 4.1 miles from the town of Mammoth Lakes. Ski in - ski out to the main gondola.
